In the process of becoming a metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City has undergone and is currently experiencing the development of numerous large-scale urban areas, contributing to the transformation of the city's landscape.
According to the Decision on the general urban planning adjustment of Ho Chi Minh City until 2025,
Approved by the Prime Minister in 2010, Ho Chi Minh City has the characteristics of a special urban area and serves as a major economic, cultural, educational, and scientific and technological center.
In addition, Ho Chi Minh City is recognized for its important political position in the country. It serves as a hub for international exchange and is a center for various industries and services in the region and Southeast Asia.
The new urban area of Thu Thiem is prioritized for development by Ho Chi Minh City.
In addition to existing urban areas, the Prime Minister has instructed Ho Chi Minh City to prioritize investment in constructing new urban areas within various programs and projects.
These include the Thủ Thiêm New Urban Area (in Thủ Đức City) with a scale of 737 hectares, the Hiệp Phước Port Urban Area (in Nhà Bè District) spanning 3,900 hectares, the West-North Urban Area covering 6,000 hectares, and the High-Tech Park (in Thủ Đức City) spanning 872 hectares.
Based on the approved adjusted general planning, over the past 10 years, the landscape of Ho Chi Minh City has gradually changed as numerous large-scale urban areas have been established and are currently taking shape.
Established since 1993 and located within the South City Urban Area (covering an area of 2,975 hectares), Phu My Hung (District 7) is considered the first model urban area in Vietnam. With a total scale of 433 hectares, after 30 years of development, Phu My Hung has become a complete urban area and home to nearly 100,000 residents.

Located in the heart of the new Thu Thiem urban area, Sala urban area covers an area of 113 hectares, including two residential zones and a park, with a total population scale of 22,500 people. As an exemplary ecological urban area with numerous green spaces, Sala urban area showcases its role as a model and contributes to transforming the face of the new Thu Thiem urban area.

With a total area of 272 hectares, Vinhomes Grand Park in Thu Duc City is envisioned as a smart urban area with nearly 80% of its space dedicated to greenery and water bodies. Launched in 2018, Vinhomes Grand Park is gradually being completed, providing housing for approximately 44,000 residents.

With a total area of 198 hectares, Van Phuc City (in Thu Duc City) is considered the largest riverside urban area in Ho Chi Minh City. With a construction density of 49%, Van Phuc City is currently in the process of completion, aiming to become a green urban area and provide housing for 38,000 people.

Located in Tan Phu District, Celadon City urban area covers an area of 82 hectares and consists of four zones. It provides nearly 8,600 apartments and low-rise houses. This is considered a comprehensive, invested urban area in Tan Phu District.

Commenced in 2021, The Global City in An Phu, Thu Duc City is regarded as the most advanced modern urban area in Ho Chi Minh City. Spanning over 117 hectares, The Global City encompasses a diverse range of housing types, from apartments and townhouses to villas. This urban area is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by 2025.
Particularly, The Global City, a high-class urban area in Thu Duc City, is currently in the process of development.
With a total area of 350 hectares, upon completion, ZeitGeist Nha Be will be considered the second-largest urban area in the southern part of Ho Chi Minh City, following Phu My Hung. Launched in 2019, it consists of 7 functional zones. ZeitGeist Nha Be urban area offers over 16,000 apartments and 770 villas.
Upon completion, ZeitGeist Nha Be will become the second-largest urban area in the southern part of Ho Chi Minh City.
